Elias Sekeris| Resume

Welcome to my website.

My name is Elias Sekeris and I am an independent researcher and PhD student in Sociology at the University of Rethymno. With an academic background in Applied Mathematics and a postgraduate specialization in Social and Solidarity Economy, I try to shape a discourse that contributes to the creation of a radically different social reality. The central axis of my path is the search and exploration of autonomy, collective self-institutionalization and direct democracy – fundamental elements that, through a process of clarifying the social imaginary, can become the building blocks of a more just and participatory future.

As part of my master’s degree, I developed my thesis entitled “The Dimension of the Commons in Karl Polanyi’s Thought”, where I explored how Polanyi’s concepts highlight the need to reconsider common resources under collective management and the solidarity economy. I seek to highlight the Commons as a foundation that allows for the creation of a community based on solidarity and sustainable development, in a way of life where collectivity does not simply exist, but is actively and consciously self-institutionalized.

As an independent researcher, I regularly write articles on online platforms, covering issues related to social justice, the democracy of the Commons and the possibilities of a society that is constituted beyond traditional economic and social institutions. Through writing and public expression, I aim to clarify social and political agendas that could renew the social imaginary and propose new forms of social organization, beyond the tyranny of capitalist/neoliberal heteronomy.

Alongside my academic studies, my engagement with music has cultivated the necessary readiness to listen and coexist in a harmonious framework, where autonomy and collectivity are creatively intertwined. This approach helps me discern how we can co-create and co-shape a world based on mutual respect and collaboration.

I envision a society in which solidarity and autonomy –  both at the individual and collective levels (one presupposes the other anyway) – are not simply values, but projects that are consciously integrated into practice. In this process, I seek to cultivate a dialogue around the emergence of a project that repositions collective needs and self-institution at the center of social life. A project that is not limited to the critique of existing institutions, but that proceeds to the foundation of a society capable of autonomously self-institutionalizing and self-governing.
